Cottages, chalets, and mansions are a refreshed and rejuvenated approach to corporate retreats and offsites. Rather than separating guests across a large venue, these intimate spaces bring companies and teams together to break down hierarchical barriers, work cross-departmentally, and connect on a higher level in a casual environment.
For smaller teams it is near impossible to find an exclusive venue as most hotels and resorts are too large to reserve for so few individuals. Ideal for groups of 10-30 people, these private properties fill that void and make it easy to curate a customized experience.
Although they provide the same benefit of exclusivity, cottages, chalets and mansions vary in terms of onsite support and flexibility.
Discover the differences between Do It Yourself, Commericially-Run, and Full Service homes and explore Retreatify-approved venues below.
With no property personnel on site, Do It Yourself cottages, chalets, and mansions offer a hands-on experience where your team can take ownership of their retreat. Typically a residential home, the owners will provide all the necessary information, manuals, and house rules, but have little involvement during your stay. This creates a very relaxed and private environment, but requires additional effort from the group to set up activities, meetings, and entertainment.

Cottages, chalets, and mansions encourage visitors to explore and take advantage of their surroundings, with several venues providing equipment for nearby canoeing, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and more. The type of activities you plan to partake in during your retreat or offsite may even dictate the location of the venue you choose so your activities are just steps away.

Whether it is testing your own skills in the kitchen or savouring the creations of professional chefs, private venues open the doors for groups to enjoy a culinary experience.
Here are the varied food and dining options for cottages, chalets, and mansions:
Bring Your Own Groceries
A very unique and convenient feature of private homes is their large, fully equipped kitchens. In Do It Yourself and Commercially-Run homes, guests are welcome to bring their own groceries and use the kitchen to make meals and snacks. Cooking together as a group can be a great way to continue developing team building skills in an unstructured environment.
Private Chef Experience
If your itinerary is full with scheduled activities and meetings, you can leave the cooking to the pros and invite a private chef to create delicious fare right in your venue. Private chefs are accustomed to serving larger groups and understand the types of meals that best suit corporate offsites. They also handle the grocery shopping, meal prep, meal service, clean up, and garbage removal so your team can focus on the tasks at hand. Sound perfect? Explore Retreatify’s network of corporate-approved private chefs who are sure to leave your taste buds satisfied.
Catering
Local caterers can also eliminate the stresses of cooking by providing delicious and nutritious meals for your team. An option for quick lunches and snacks, caterers can a more affordable option than private chefs when dining service and personnel are not required.
Pricing for cottages, chalets, and mansions is typically based on a fixed nightly rate rather than a per person rate. Home owners and property managers may include a cleaning fee into this rate, which is industry standard.
A unique characteristic of these venues is their dynamic pricing, which fluctuates based on the season. With more demand in the summer months, prices are typically at their highest from June to September, but exception deals can be found in the shoulder season.
With a limited amount of space in chalets, cottages, and mansions, groups are likely required to share bedrooms and/or bathrooms. We highly recommend using the home’s floor plans and layout descriptions to assign rooms in advance and minimize surprises for guests. It is also helpful to reference your company’s policies on accommodations as it could inform the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you require.
Full Service cottages, chalets, and mansions will typically have designated meeting rooms equipped with audio/visual equipment to support conference calls, presentations, and more.
Do It Yourself and Commercially-Run properties feature open living spaces and large outdoor patios that can serve as a unique, comfortable meeting space. These venues often include flat screen TVs and WiFi, while additional items such as flip charts and projectors can be made available upon request.
With minimal to no personnel onsite at a Do It Yourself or Commercially Run cottage, chalet, or mansion, you do not have immediate assistance when problems arise. This requires an increased level of preparation and responsibility from attendees. For peace of mind, Retreatify ensures our partners provide guests with a list of emergency procedures and contacts should something go wrong. We also do everything in our power to mediate crises so your team can get back on track.
Cottages, chalets, and mansions are often located in rural locations where access to stores and supplies is a drive away. Teams should be reminded to bring everything they need with them and consider picking up groceries prior to arrival.
Being a more intimate space, cottages, chalets, and mansions have limited areas for attendees to go off on their own. If your group is comfortable being around each other for the majority of the time, coordinators should come prepared with a well-planned itinerary so guests do not become bored and disengaged.
Cottages, chalets, and mansions typically do not have onsite cleaning services and require a longer turn-over time in between bookings. Due to this, home owners and property managers will require a minimum night stay, especially during peak season. Retreatify has special arrangements with our partners to book for less than the minimum when possible.
A cottage, chalet, or mansion’s house rules may affect the types of activities and entertainment that can be held onsite. It is helpful to communicate your ideas with the property manager or home owner in advance, so your itinerary is not disturbed. These rules can include limitations on alcohol and loud music in the evening, which could conflict with night-time social events on the property.
